The Embrace – Boxi

LA’s Carmichael Gallery is once again (see the post on HUSH) offering the stateside premiere of UK talent. The gallery will be home to an exhibit by the Kent, England-born Boxi in April. Boxi used his time earning a BA in Fine Arts from the London St. Martins School of Art to learn a number of different mediums/techniques, including spray paint on canvas, sculpture and print-making. And his hard work shows.

The preview of the exhibit – which will also feature a site-specific installation – I was just sent is stunning. Just check the pics above and below, and you can see how Boxi manages to

“polarize the stability of what is at first perceived to be harmless or sweet but in reality turns out to be pathetically desperate or tragic or vice versa,” as he himself said was his goal.

I could go on for pages about the implications I see in this image of the girl and the dog, especially when I consider it from Boxi’s perspective: an attempt to portray “

incongruous narrative in figuration.” (again, his words) In a single moment, the paintnig captures the purity and curiosity we cherish so much about childhood, and contrasts it with the grotesque harshness of reality (manifested in the cast on the puppy’s leg and the monstrous bunny ears on the child).

The gallery hosts the opening reception on April 9th, and the exhibit will remain open until April 30th (check here for more info).

“It is in this state of reflection, this ‘grey area’ of ambiguity and blurred truth that I have found myself in, a place where trends and crashes in the market aggressively threaten and pressurize social behavior. Making life-sized figures that articulate this uncertainty is a way for me to come to terms with the phrase ‘of our time’.”
