If their most recent issue is any indication, Wax Poetics still has exquisite taste in music. In fact, some of our all-time favorite artists cover the new release as Barry White, D’Angelo, Gil Scott-Heron and Erykah Badu all get plenty of face time thanks to two split covers — an act that shows just why The New York Times Style Magazine called WP “the best and most exquisitely laid-out music bimonthly in America.”
WP is more than well laid-out though. In fact, it’s The New Yorker of music writing in that reading a copy immediately imparts a sense of superior knowledge and supreme pretentiousness. Still, just as The New Yorker really is that smart, so too is Wax Poetics, and you really can’t knock someone who’s that much smarter and wiser than you are.
Be forewarned: Wax is not for the faint of heart — or those who wish to move from magazine to magazine quickly. I bought their last issue months ago and still haven’t worked my way to a feature article because I’ve been too busy looking up all the other songs and artists they mention in the preceding pages.
#42 looks like a doozy though, and I’ll probably give in and pick it up this week. Especially because I really want to read the article on the history of the wah-wah pedal.
