The weSLAM Poetry Slam at Wesleyan University

Something is happening here, and you don’t know what it is… – Bob Dylan

A series of poetry slams has sprung up at Wesleyan University. For the last few months WordSmith and I, along with a handful of some incredibly brave and genuine individuals, have found ourselves in the middle of a whirlwind… On Friday night, on a college campus, 400 kids arrived in the same venue… to listen to poetry.

Soon, I will have a chance to describe what is actually going on here, what’s it’s been like to watch a scene develop in the hands of people who love it and want nothing more than to share it, wholeheartedly and passionately, with anyone willing to listen. For now, I will let the poets speak for themselves.

Here are some recordings from weSLAM’s Final Poetry Slam at Wesleyan where 19 poets vied for 5 spots on Wesleyan’s first-ever slam team which will compete at CUPSI regionals (maybe nationals?), but, more than anything, will continue to help bring poetry into the lives of students on this campus.

Thanks to WESU FM’s “Speak Your Piece” for the recording.
