Perpetual TNC favorite, Flying Lotus, decided to upload, for our listening pleasure, remixes of such indie favorites as Björk and Massive Attack to his Soundcloud (which, incidentally, he apparently detests). Now, this isn’t a specific collection per se, but more of a tasting course of what John Coltrane’s youngest relative has been messing around with. And, as his listeners have come to expect, it’s dark and glitchy. However these remixes, done in what little spare time FlyLo can amass, give us a view into both extremes of his music. The Björk remix is sparse and haunting, with Björk’s singular voice taking center stage behind drums that never quite catch on the beat. Spinning 180 degrees, his remix of French dance legend Mr. Oizo‘s “Rubber” is dense, swirling, and typically attention deprived, with different samples of voices and bubbling electronics fading in and out from left to right.

Mentioning FlyLo’s busy schedule, many people forget that he’s not only a musician but is a filmmaker as well. To that end, it is important to note his incredible video production of the Erykah Badu tune “Gone Baby Don’t Be Long” off of New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh. It’s futuristic and feels animated, and somehow comes across as distinctly FlyLo but perfect for the crooning, uniquely funky Badu. Suffice it to say the man doesn’t take many breaks. If only we could all be so artistically busy.
