Of course, many music fans have been buzzing about Kanye West and Jay-Z’s upcoming Watch The Throne, but this new remix of their single, “Otis,” by Philly-born musician Mike Taylor is definitely something most fans won’t be expecting.  You might remember Mike as Tu Phace, who we’ve featured on this site before, but though this ever innovative singer/rapper/producer has decided to switch things up and go by his government name, his music has remained as fresh as ever.  After releasing a couple of Ke$ha remix/covers that were hotter than the original songs, the Sony/Epic signee released a free mixtape, From The Stars, this past spring, further defining his eclectic blend of pop, electro, soul, and hip-hop.  Though Mike’s recent music has strayed from his hip-hop roots toward a dynamic new pop sound that lends itself to more singing than rapping, the kid is still a hungry emcee at heart, and his new remix of Kanye and Jay’s “Otis” proves that when he feels inspired, Mr. Taylor can still throw down in a cypher like none other. The song, produced by frequent collaborator LF Daze and complete with the expected Otis Redding vocal samples, features Mike powerfully belting his own soul chorus between razor sharp verses, giving a new meaning and urgency to the phrase, “Watch the throne.”  Mike goes in HARD on this one, effortlessly blending charismatic wit and self-awareness with swaggering braggadocio in lines like, “Was on a search for summer under the autumn moon / but when I spit I will have you niggas wishin I return to the autotune.” Lethal.  Check it out below.
