If you like the rainy, gritty complexity of British dubstep producer Burial, then you should be giving a listen to Cuttooth – especially if you’re down for something with a bit more calm and subtlety. Cuttooth, aka Nick Cooke, was part of the team that brought you The Forcefield Kids, and now the Newcastle-based, Northumberland-born producer has set off on his own venture with the release of his debut album Elements. Though it sounds like this album may have come out of a place of frustration “I then decided that other people are far too unreliable to work with,” says Cooke in the album’s official write-up, it also clearly comes from a place of careful consideration and artistic diligence. On Elements, Cuttooth draws from acts like Burial and Flying Lotus but where the former is angst-ridden, Cuttooth is calm, and where the later is glitchy, Cuttooth is smooth. None of the tracks on Elements are going to have you rocking out in your room, and they certainly won’t top the charts, but they’re good, reliable, ambient beats perfect for those late night smoke/write/study (though not necessarily in that order) sessions.
