In lieu of today’s Monday Music Mention (one coming tomorrow though!)… With the fall semester well underway at most colleges and universities, students around the country are beginning to adjust (or readjust) to college life. I, on the other hand, having just graduated find myself with more than enough time to do nothing. Last night I went through a whole lot of my old notebooks, and came across some gems from my freshman year at the University of Michigan that I’d like to offer as advice for today’s college student.
Thoughts on College Food (real notes I took during class):
Have ye any sage wisdom for the young ones? Have any biting sarcasm left over from you college days? Let us know in the comments section.

The world’s largest hip-hop festival, Rock the Bells, is back and, as usual, the biggest names are coming out. This year’s festival will feature headline performances from the likes of Lauryn Hill, Nas, Erykah Badu, and Black Star to name a few. Several acts (including Nas, Black Star, Black Moon, Mobb Deep, and Lauryn Hill) are apparently going to be performing some of their most legendary albums in full.
In past years, the festival has been plagued by poor organizing, lackluster sound production (A Tribe Called Quest set should not have the bass/treble balance of a European Jungle beat night club) and uninterested acts (Talib Kweli has knack for not appearing, Wu-Tang has traditionally not given a rats ass about their performance). Will this year’s tour be different? There’s no way to know, but one thing is for certain: this kind of line-up makes me very willing to forget all the past blunders.

By gathering Boogie, Guy Denning, Aakash Nihalani and Pascual Sisto for After the Rain, The Carmichael Gallery has gathered four of the m ost interesting visual artists around under one roof. Though each of these artists boasts vastly different styles (not to mention expertise in different media) the idea behind After the Rain is to create a complementary collection:
The precise neon color sculptures and abstract mixed media canvases of Aakash Nihalani highlight the raw, candid nature of Boogie’s black and white photographs, while Guy Denning’s dark portraits, built with indulgent layers of oil paint, situate Pascual Sisto’s video and sculptural works in a new contextual light.
The four artists represent four different countries (Serbia, USA, England and Spain) so there’s plenty of diversity in terms of inspiration as well. For more info on the artists and the exhibit head on over to the Carmichael Gallery’s official page.
