In lieu of today’s Monday Music Mention (one coming tomorrow though!)… With the fall semester well underway at most colleges and universities, students around the country are beginning to adjust (or readjust) to college life. I, on the other hand, having just graduated find myself with more than enough time to do nothing. Last night I went through a whole lot of my old notebooks, and came across some gems from my freshman year at the University of Michigan that I’d like to offer as advice for today’s college student.

Thoughts on College Food (real notes I took during class):

  • The food sucks. The beer sucks, too. But people seem very willing to give the later away for free.
  • The gyro, specifically the chicken gyro, is a highly underrated meal option and deserves a more prominent role in American collegiate society.
  • The food sucks.
  • My personal appreciation for real eggs has soared recently and shows no signs of crashing.
  • I have never craved my own shitty cooking so much in my life — oh the feasts I would make if I had a kitchen of my own.
  • The food sucks.

Have ye any sage wisdom for the young ones?  Have any biting sarcasm left over from you college days? Let us know in the comments section.

The world’s largest hip-hop festival, Rock the Bells, is back and, as usual, the biggest names are coming out. This year’s festival will feature headline performances from the likes of Lauryn Hill, Nas, Erykah Badu, and Black Star to name a few. Several acts (including Nas, Black Star, Black Moon, Mobb Deep, and Lauryn Hill) are apparently going to be performing some of their most legendary albums in full.

In past years, the festival has been plagued by poor organizing, lackluster sound production (A Tribe Called Quest set should not have the bass/treble balance of a European Jungle beat night club) and uninterested acts (Talib Kweli has knack for not appearing, Wu-Tang has traditionally not given a rats ass about their performance). Will this year’s tour be different? There’s no way to know, but one thing is for certain: this kind of line-up makes me very willing to forget all the past blunders.

I recently started working as an intern at Angelhouse Studios. Essentially I am an apprentice to a highly talented multi-instrumentalist named Drew Kapner (pictured on the right) who plays with a band called Kill Matriarch. They combine the eerie vocals and intense, often dark cryptic lyrics of their female lead singer Matriarch with heavy metal influenced experimental electronic rock. When I first heard their music I was simply amazed at their insane ability to mix electro rock, drum and bass, metal, and even dance music. Think Nine Inch Nails juxtaposed with a female lead vocalist… Yes, awesome. This is a really interesting band currently taking over the Los Angeles music scene and they are definitely pushing the boundaries of music. They have a show coming up March 19th at the Palladium Ball Room (SOUTH BY SOWHAT) in Dallas, TX along with Enter Shikari, Chiodos, Gatsby’s American Dream and Of Mice & Men click here for tickets. If you like intense live electro, rock, metal, DnB or Dubstep you will LOVE this band. Check out the vid below!

Also you can check out a remix they asked me to do of their song GUNZ here below:

By gathering Boogie, Guy Denning, Aakash Nihalani and Pascual Sisto for After the RainThe Carmichael Gallery has gathered four of the m ost interesting visual artists around under one roof.  Though each of these artists boasts vastly different styles (not to mention expertise in different media) the idea behind After the Rain is to create a complementary collection:

The precise neon color sculptures and abstract mixed media canvases of Aakash Nihalani highlight the raw, candid nature of Boogie’s black and white photographs, while Guy Denning’s dark portraits, built with indulgent layers of oil paint, situate Pascual Sisto’s video and sculptural works in a new contextual light.

The four artists represent four different countries (Serbia, USA, England and Spain) so there’s plenty of diversity in terms of inspiration as well. For more info on the artists and the exhibit head on over to the Carmichael Gallery’s official page.

Love: Fiction Series – Which Came First…?

TNC’s own Blogger Please drops another original story as part of his ongoing Fiction Series. Enjoy! For me at least, when I’m in a restaurant I’ve never been to, it’s difficult to choose what I’d like to order. I can scan the menu for minutes not saying a word, the conversation at the table going [...]

Live: Escape The City – Head to the Palisades

Thanks to TNC’s Summer In The City recommendations, I’ve had the pleasure to attend some fabulous concerts. But with the last days of summer being counted, I find myself seeking some tranquility rather than sweaty crowds and loud music. For those of you in NYC, you’ve probably never heard of the Palisades, nevertheless been there. [...]

When I spoke with Jah C I was pleasantly surprised at his humble attitude considering how much he has accomplished already by the [...]
